What's "Barney"?
----------------
Barney is a program that allows ISPs to take back
control of their remote access equipment. This is
accomplished by routinely scanning all access devices
(requires Livingston ComOS installed on device)
for current logins. Data from these scans is analyzed
to identify multiple concurrent logins by the same
user. The number of logins is compared to configuration
parameters to determine if this is 'approved'.

If unauthorized access is detected, Barney can be
configured to react in several ways, including adding
the user to a 'warned' list and notifying them of their
transgression, sending email to administrator(s), and
even automatically denying continued access. Users in
the 'warned' list can be auto-upgraded to the 'banned'
list through subsequent transgressions.

To install, run setup.exe on any x86 Windows 95, 98
or NT computer. An icon will be added to your Start
Menu in the Programs group. You can move this to the
Startup group to automatically start Barney.

To configure, start Barney.exe, and when prompted
enter your customer and registration codes. If you
don't have these codes, see "Register" below. Once
the main form loads, go to the "PortMasters" and
"Config" tabs to configure your desired setup.

If you select "Send Admin E-Mail" or "Send Warning
E-Mail" on the config tab, you must enter an SMTP
Server and User. All mail sent by Barney will go
to the server you enter here, and will be marked
as coming from the user you enter here. Some mail
servers will require you to enter just a username,
some want username@domain.com, some require that
you enter a username that exists, some don't.

You may need to experiment to determine what works
for your mail server. To help you do this, use the
"Test E-Mail" button. A message will be sent to
the address of your choice.

If you select "Send Warning E-Mail", be sure to
edit the Warning.txt to customize the message that
is sent, as well as enter a domain to send the
warning mail to.
