                 Gray Scale Management for VGA Displays
                 --------------------------------------

     Toshiba has provided two utilities, VCHAD and DSGSM, to help you 
control the way your computer converts colors into levels of gray on 
your flat panel screen.  

VCHAD:

     There may arise situations when two adjacent colored regions on your
screen are displayed at the same or similar gray levels.  This will make it
difficult or impossible to distinguish the two regions.  For example, suppose
an application displays text on your screen such that the color of the text 
and the color of the text background map to the same gray level.  This will
cause the text to blend in with the background color.

     VCHAD is used to adjust the way colors are converted into levels of 
gray.  Please refer to your computer's reference manual for more information 
on how to use this program.

     If you plan to use a mouse driver and VCHAD together on your system, 
you must load the mouse driver before you load VCHAD. If you are loading your
mouse driver (e.g., MOUSE.SYS) via CONFIG.SYS, then there is no problem.  
If you are loading your mouse driver (e.g., MOUSE.COM) and VCHAD.EXE via 
AUTOEXEC.BAT or the command line, then make sure MOUSE.COM is executed before
the VCHAD.EXE.

     VCHAD has been updated so that it is compatible with MS-DOS 5.0.  If you 
have a previous version of VCHAD on your computer you should replace it
with the updated version on the Diagnostics and Supplemental disk.

     VCHAD consumes about 38,000 bytes of memory when loaded as a Terminate
and Stay Resident program (TSR). If you are running on a 386SX, 386 or 486
machine you can use a 386 Expanded Memory Manager such as MS-DOS 5.0's EMM386
to place TSRs such as VCHAD into an Upper Memory Block. This will provide more
memory to run your application programs. Please refer to your MS-DOS 5.0
User's Manual for more information on how to use EMM386 to load VCHAD and
other TSRs into this memory area. 

     Note that VCHAD does not necessarily have to be run as a TSR.  Please
refer to your computer's reference manual for more information on the 
operation of VCHAD.

DSGSM:

     DSGSM is the DOS Shell Gray Scale Manager utility.	This utility is 
a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program intended for use with the 
Task Swapping function of the DOS 5.0 Shell (DOSSHELL).  

     The DOS 5.0 Shell allows the user to do task swapping between several 
active applications. DSGSM will preserve the individual color-to-gray level 
mappings for each active application.

     You will need DSGSM only if you use the DOS Shell Task Swapper and
you use VCHAD to change the color-to-gray level mappings.

     You must invoke DSGSM before starting the DOS 5.0 Shell.  This is done
by entering the following command: 

        DSGSM

     An installation message will appear on your screen to indicate that
DSGSM is now loaded.

     DSGSM consumes about 4,000 bytes of memory when loaded as a TSR. If you
are running on a 386SX, 386 or 486 machine you can use a 386 Expanded Memory 
Manager such as MS-DOS 5.0's EMM386 to place TSRs such as DSGSM into an Upper
Memory Block. This will provide more memory to run your application programs.

use EMM386 to load DSGSM and other TSRs into this memory area.
