Files

Understanding some fundamental DOS concepts is necessary to make full use of the 95LX. From the user's standpoint, the most important function an operating system provides is a systematic and reliable means for storing data in "files." Users need to understand what constitutes a file, and a legal filename. 95LX users should also understand what directories and subdirectories are.

The first three columns in this series dealt with files. If we are to preserve our efforts in any application, we must save any work that we do into a file. We use System Manager applications such as Lotus 1-2-3, APPT, PHONE, MEMO, COMM and HP CALC to create files. We can then use the System Manager FILER program to see exactly what files we have.
