Search files from all the directories on the disks
                  WhereIs Version 1.00
           Copyright (C) 1995 Hiroyuki Sekiya

[1] What is WhereIs?

Similar to a UNIX tool 'whereis', this program searches all
the directories on the disks for files with the specified
name. This program has advantages of an EXM application, with
menus and other graphical user interfaces (GUI), for the file
name entries and option settings. The search results are not
only displayed as a list of files, but also submitted to a
  DOS program to open them.

[2] Hardware/software requirements

WhereIs works on the System Manager of the 100/200LX.

[3] Installation

Add whereis.exm to AppManager or MoreEXM.

[4] Usage

o File Search

When launched, WhereIs shows a small dialogbox with a title
"File Mask". Enter a filename into "File to Search" box and
press [ENTER]. Filename accepts wildcard characters (? and
*). All the drives and directories will be searched for the
  specified filename.

o Open the found files

An hourglass is displayed during the file search. After the
completion of the search, the files found with it are
displayed as a list of the full path names. Select a file
from the list and press [ENTER] to open it will a DOS
  program.

By default, Command Line field should show "lap %", where lap
is the name of a DOS program to launch an application
associated with the file extension. '%' is substituted by the
highlighted filename when it is run. If you want to edit by
PalEdit Editor, enter "pe %" into Command Line box. You can skip
'%', if it is the last part of the line. Thus "pe" is enough
  in this case.

After the command is set and [ENTER] is pressed, DOS command
will be executed. After the completion of the DOS command,
the file list screen of WhereIs returns. You can then open
  another file on the list.

To start a new search, press [F3] from the file list screen.
The dialogbox with a "File Mask" title will appear again.

o Opening more than one files

Press [SPACE] to select the the file. A diamond mark ()
will appears on the left of the file name on the cursor.
Press [SPACE] again to deselect. Press [SHIFT]+[SPACE] to
  select/deselect all the files.

After the file selection, press [ENTER] and the DOS program
repeatedly runs for each selected files.

o Copy the file name

Pressing [COPY] ([Fn]+[=]) key within the file list screen
will copy the filename at the current cursor position to
the clipboard. Even when there are files selected, the only
one file at the cursor position is the target of this action.

Pressing [CUT] key will copy the file name to the clipboard,
place the [PASTE] keycode in the key buffer and then quit
  from WhereIs.

o Search option

To set options for the file search, press [F2](Options)
while the File Mask dialogbox is on the screen, or press
  [MENU] - [O](Options) - [S](Search Options...).

"Target Drives" field defines which drives to search. The
default is set to "ABCDE", to search drives A to E. If you
want faster search, set this option to "AC" or "ACD". Add
other drives according to your need.

Mark the checkbox "Search Hidden Files Too" for including
files with hidden attribute for search.

o Launcher Option

To set options for opening files, press [F2](Options)
while the Open File dialogbox is on the screen, or press
  [MENU] - [O](Options) - [L](Launch Options...).

"Default Command" field defines the default value for "Dos
Command" field in the Open File dialogbox. It appears
every time WhereIs is launched. Editing the "Dos Command"
field can change the command only temporarily but cannot
change the default command. You can change the default
command from the Launch Option dialogbox only.

Marking the checkbox "Exec then Pause" will cause the program
to wait for a keystroke after the completion of the command.

Mark the checkbox "Don't Change Dir" if you do not want to
change the current directory. If it is not marked, the
program changes the current directory to a directory of the
selected file before running the DOS command.

[7] History of this software

This software was originally developed as one of the 9 new
programs bundled with the book "HP200LX Software Bible",
co-authored by Hiroyuki Sekiya and Hirotaka Hamada, published
by Softbank, Tokyo, in April 1996 (ISBN4-89052-911-X). As
such, the programs should not be distributed on networks nor
regarded as freeware. In short, you needed to buy the book
  to use them.

Fortunately the book received an enthusiastic acceptance
within the HP200LX user community in Japan and it reached an
out-of-print status two years after its publication, in 1998.
Now that the book is no more available easily, the author of
these programs decided to release them as copyrighted
  freeware.
