================================ Fleet Defender for DOS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Last revised: November 25, 1997 ================================ System Requirements =================== IBM PC 33MHz 80386 compatible or faster DOS 5.0 or later 4MB RAM (minimum of 566K of conventional memory and 3MB EMS) VGA graphics for 320 x 200 x 256 colors Hard drive (15MB free) Mouse Recommended ----------- IBM PC 33MHz 80486 compatible or faster Joystick Sound Blaster, Ad Lib, Roland or ProAudio Spectrum sound card Installation and Loading ======================== Q: The installer hangs when I try to select the sound card. A: Some hardware is interfering with the autodetection for your sound card. To run the installer without autodetection, type "install -s" at the DOS prompt. You will then have to manually choose your sound card during the setup. Q: The game freezes at the MicroProse logo when I try to run it. A: Unfortunately, Fleet Defender will not work if your sound card is set to IRQ 10. You will have to set your sound card's IRQ to something different to play the game. Q: Fleet Defender freezes when I try to take off. A: Make sure that your sound card settings are correct. To test this, try setting the game for no sound and then try to take off. If this works, then you know that the problem is caused by your sound card. If you are using a boot disk, make sure that the RAM inclusions and exclusions have been removed from the EMM386.EXE line in your CONFIG.SYS file. Q: When I run Fleet Defender, I get an error message of "Error 80. No address selected." A: Try reinitializing your sound card by running the Fleet Defender installer. First, change to your Fleet Defender directory by typing "c:" and then "cd\f14" at the DOS prompt. Then type "install" to rerun the installer. If you have a Sound Blaster, please verify the settings for the card in your CONFIG.SYS file. Q: Fleet Defender locks up when I try to calibrate my joystick. A: This problem occurs on Acer systems. You need to download ACER.COM to fix this problem. The file is available on both CompuServe and our Web site. Sound ===== Q: When I run Fleet Defender, I don't hear any speech in the game. A: This problem is usually caused by not having enough EMS (expanded memory). You need at least 2.8MB (and perhaps more for certain missions). You can check how much EMS you have by typing "mem/c" at the DOS prompt and looking at the total bytes of free EMS memory. Another possible cause can be an incorrect value for the IRQ or DMA setting for your sound card. Since the Fleet Defender installer does not automatically detect these settings, you must enter the correct values. ProAudio Spectrum cards have both a ProAudio Spectrum and Sound Blaster compatible sections. They must have different interrupt and DMA settings. You can use either ProAudio Spectrum or Sound Blaster settings for digital sound, although we recommend ProAudio Spectrum since the quality is higher. We do not recommend choosing Sound Blaster emulation for music. If you have an older Sound Blaster, its default IRQ is 7 which is normally reserved for the parallel printer port. If your computer uses interrupt 7, then a Sound Blaster set to IRQ 7 will not work. Q: When I turn off music in the game at the Difficulty screen, I still hear the sound of drums playing. A: This compatibility problem with older Sound Blaster Pro, Sound Blaster and ProAudio Spectrum sound cards has been fixed in a later version of Fleet Defender. Just update your game to version 2.0 by downloading F14V20.ZIP from CompuServe or our Web site. Q: Whenever I fire a missile, I hear the sound of cymbals instead. A: This problem has been fixed in a later version of Fleet Defender. Just update your game to version 2.0 by downloading F14V20.ZIP from CompuServe or our Web site.
