~Grand Monster Slam

A few hints and tips - By Simon Burrows

`After going back to this classic game a week ago, I thought some
`tips might be in order for those of you out there who may still
`be playing it, and still having problems with it.

~`Scoring Tips

` When you are playing 'Revenge of the Beloms' during a real
` game, you will know that you can get 50 bonus points for each
` Belom you punch over the number requested by the king (10
` for round one, 20 for round two etc.). However, by punching
` exactly the number of Beloms that the king asks, you will
` automatically get a straight 5000 point bonus. If my maths
` serves me, the only way you can get a better bonus than this
` is to punch at least 101 Beloms MORE than the king asks, which
` is a very tall order indeed, and will take a lot longer, too!

` If you are only interested in getting a high score and do not
` want to win the competition necessarily, then why not keep
` losing on the 'Foulten Feeding' competition you reach after
` winning each league? That way, you get to go back and redo
` the league, whilst keeping all the points you won during it.
` By doing this several times, you will get all the points from
` the league several time over without actually progressing
` anywhere, and thus, not getting onto any more difficult parts
` of the game. I would have thought that the best league to do
` this in would be the third simply because it's so easy to win
` it that you should have no worries about not qualifying for
` the 'Foulten Feeding'.

~`"Revenge of the Beloms" Tip

` Although both the 'up' and 'down' keys will work in both
` situations, get into the habit of, when facing TOWARDS the
` Belom you are next going to punch, using the 'up' key to punch
` it, and when facing AWAY, using the 'down' key. This gives
` your character a longer reach towards the Belom so he will be
` able to punch the Below away quicker. Although this isn't
` important in the early stages when the Beloms come at you very
` slowly, when it gets frantic after about 50-60 sucessful
` punches you will be grateful for the small amount of extra
` time this practice will give you.

~`"Foulten Feeding" Tip

` Once you can feed the first Foulten the others become easier
` because you can remember the amount of time your finger spent
` on the fire button to get the Belom in, and then just lengthen
` this a tiny amount for each Foulten thereafter. To make sure
` you get this right, practice the next kick twice between the
` time you kick Belom 1 and the time your character reaches the
` kicking position for Belom 2. When you are happy with this,
` try the kick for real. If you sucessfully feed the Foulten,
` keep using this practice method between each Foulten. If you
` miss any, practice the next kick with appropriate adjustments.

"Main Tournament" Tips

` Assuming that there is a 1 in 3 chance of your opponent
` kicking a penalty to the left, the right and the centre during
` a penalty, always stay in the middle of the pitch when
` attempting to save a penalty in the 2nd and 1st leagues (those
` with the fence in). Although this won't make you save any
` more penalties than if you were to anticipate your opponent's
` kick randomly, it does mean that after each penalty your
` character will be ready to carry on the match in the middle of
` the pitch. This is, as I'm sure you know, the best place to
` be for quickly returning all the balls, as, from there,
` you'll be able to kick the balls back along the ground quickly
` and easily.

` Conversely, when you are taking the penalty, always shoot to
` either the right or the left of your oppomnent so that they
` must go to one side to save it. If they do this, they won't
` be left in central position, so they will either have to move
` into it, or spend longer chipping the balls over the fence.
` If they don't do this, they won't save the penalty and you
` will gain an advantage that way instead.

` If your opponent has cleared all the Beloms from one side of
` the pitch, and is currently clearing those from the other
` side, forget about knocking him over for a minute, and kick
` one ball to the area he has cleared. That way, he will have
` to go all the way back over there again to return that Belom.
` This will stop him from winning easily and give you a chance
` to nab him while he runs across! The only case where this
` isn't true is when playing 'Narfuk' (I think that's his
` name), as he can return the Belom's without having to stand
` in front of them so won't have to run over the other side of
` the screen anyway.
