Goldstar GCD-R420/420B CD-ROM

These ones are quite tough... I have 4 of them, much used and they still work and read many CDs. This short text is a small manual of GCD-R420.

Goldstar GCD-R420B, also known as Reveal CD-R420, were connected to PC via special interface and standard flat ribbon cable (like for hard disks). It looks like IDe, but is NOT an IDE. It requires special ISA expansion card. Let's begin with jumper settings:

The card has 2 jumper blocks, one is 4-pair PN801, the second is 9-pair PN803.

First one, PN801, sets card's address (* - default setting).

Second jumper set, PN803, specifies DMA mode. It requires ONLY 2 jumpers set like this:

1 2 7
2 3 8
3 4 9

Drivers - Download driver disk image here. You can write it to floppy with RaWrite or use WinImage to extract.

The package above contains:
 - Driver for DOS v.1.34
 - Older version of DOS driver for compatibility reasons (v. 1.22).
 - Driver for OS/2 (two versions, I've never tried it)
 - Utilities package
 - Drivers for CGB-520B, 540B, 560B.

Drivers configuration: From DOS, it's well explained in readme files. If you're doing it not from installer, remember that you still need to call MSCDEX in AUTOEXEC.BAT to make CD appear as drive letter. If you want Win95 not to hang when My Computer window is opened, you should try to turn DMA on. It will still hang, but not for so long :). Remember to pass correct parameters in CONFIG.SYS: /M:D /T:x where x is your DMA.
