IBM 5170 Fixed Disk and Diskette Drive Adapter -
Cabling Information

Floppy drive  (diskette drive)

• You need to use the particular cable shown at here.  The IBM controller expects it.  The cable manipulates both the motor-on and drive-select lines.

• Click here to see a floppy drive cabling diagram.

• For 5.25" drives, terminate as appropriate, per the diagram at here.

Hard drive  (fixed disk)

You have a choice between using a flat (untwisted)(straight-through) control cable, or a twisted control cable.
Check to see which of the two you have, then use the corresponding option below.

Note that in the cable set that IBM supplied in the 5170, the hard drive's control cable is twisted.  Photo at here.

OPTION #1:  Flat (untwisted)(straight-through) control cable

OPTION #2:  Twisted control cable

Click here to see what I call a double-twisted cable, a cable with twists at two locations.  Rare, but it needs to be compensated for.  I am unaware of IBM supplying these for the IBM PC family.
