Cacko/Crow ROM update 3.10 (Kernel 2.4.18)
for Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 and SL-5000D

This ROM is an enhancement of Sharp's 3.10 release. It places /home on an MMC or SD card, thus freeing the RAM previously used by /home for running applications. The result is that Linux has all 64MB (or 32MB for SL-5000D) of memory available for its use. Instructions for preparing MMC/SD card and flashing your Zaurus can be found here.

Features:

  • Kernel has full access to all 64MB RAM (32MB for SL-5000D)
  • Added EmbeddedKonsole
  • Added FileManager
  • Added Process Manager
  • Added fdisk, top, ssh
  • Added Smooth system fonts
  • Builtin Cyrillic support and russian keyboard layout
  • Removed Opera due to space considerations :( Get the ipkg here (not mirrored yet).
  • Removed Patience game

Note: MMC/SD cards can be slow. To improve performance Cacko/Crow can use async mode for writing. To enable asynchronous writes to the MMC/SD card, run Embedded Konsole or connect to zaurus via ssh (ssh 192.168.129.201) and execute the following commands:

$su
#echo MOUNT_OPTIONS=\"async,noatime\">/home/root/.rom_options
#reboot

Bugs:

  • After installing on MMC/SD and first booting into Qtopia, you must reboot the system again manually, otherwise Qtopia will crash after pressing hardware keys (hmm, problem in cyrkbd driver with new kernel 2.4.18).
