The A-36A was an Allison-engined version of the P-51B. The British were less
than impressed with its performance and installed a Rolls-Royce "Merlin"
engine in it and a legend was born. The Allison engined versions of this
fighter served in several capacities from training to ground attack rolls.
The name "Apache" was name given to the design by the North American design
team, but the British called it Mustang and the name stuck. The official
nickname of the A-36A was actually "Invader" but that name is too long to
fit in my modified file, so I chose "Apache" as an alternate. Most of these
aircraft served in a ground attack role in Europe. They had grate-like dive
brakes that would extend above and below each wing. However, most of these
devices were wired down in the field. I've simulated these brakes on the
A-36A I've created here in two ways. I've made full flaps safe to extend and
leave extended upto 500 mph. I've also added dive brakes that can be extended
by pressing the letter "B" on your keyboard. I am not sure the latter will
work with the stock version of SWOTL as it comes out of the box. It may only
work for those of you that have upgraded with the P-80 expansion disk set.
The weaponry of this plane has been altered slightly to reflect its ground
attack role and the killing power of the ammunition has been increased just
a little bit to reflect explosive rounds and incendiary rounds used by
ground attack fighters. The top speed of this plane has been reduced to
reproduce the speed attained by the Allison engine.

To use this plane you should copy the A36A.ZIP file into the P51B.SPC file.
Example: COPY A36A.EXP P51B.SPC
