The Heinkel He219A-7/R1 "Uhu"

VERSION 1.1 -Summary of changes: Night camoflage, direct
access of INT files, new side views.

On the night of June 11-12, the He219 night fighter received
its first combat test. MAJ Streib, the Gruppenkommandeur of
I/NJG 1, flew the He219A-0 and shot down five British bombers
in the course of the evening. Generalfeldmarschall Milch was
hard to impress, though. His comment was, "Yes, they are
enthusiastic about this aircraft as it shot down five on its
first sortie. One can hardly ask more, but perhaps Streib
would have shot down as many bombers had he been flying
another aircraft!"

Regardless, the work on the He219 "Uhu" (Owl) continued, and
it became regarded as one of the finest night fighters of
WWII. The model represented is the He219A-7/R1, which had 2
x MG151 20mm cannon (300 rpg), 2 x Mk108 30mm cannon (100
rpg), and 2 x Mk103 30mm cannon (100 rpg), all firing
forward. It also had 2 x Mk108 30mm cannon (100 rpg) in the
"schraege musik" (jazz music) configuration, firing forward
and upward at a 65 degree angle. The pilot was protected by
a 335 pound frontal armor shell, with an armored glass
screen, and both crewmembers had ejection seats.

Top speed was 416 mph at 22,965 feet with a cruising speed of
391 and a range of 960 miles. The ceiling was 41,660. Climb
rate was 1810 feet/minute.

HOW TO USE THIS PLANE

1. First, copy the enclosed files to the following
    locations:

    HE219.EXP (into the AC subdirectory)
    B17NIGHT.EXP (into the AC subdirectory)
    DO17.PAC (into the AC subdirectory)
    DO17S.PAC (into the AC subdirectory)
    HE219C.EXP (into the AC subdirectory)
    NITEOWL.PAC (into the AC subdirectory)

    HE219.INT (into the CP subdirectory)

    HE219.BAT, HE219C.BAT and NO219.BAT can be placed
where ever you have your batch files.

2. IMPORTANT: Make backup copies of your B17G.SPC, B17F.SPC,
    BF109G6.SPC, and VGA.PAC files to B17G.ORI, B17F.ORI,
BF109G6.ORI, and VGA.ORI respectively. This must be done
for the install/remove batch files to work. Leave the
.ORI files in the same subdirectory where the normal
    files are.

3. Run the He219.bat file. You must type "he219 x" where x
represents the letter of the hard drive where you have
SWOTL installed. This file copies the HE219.EXP and the
NITEOWL.PAC files into the BF109G6.SPC and VGA.PAC files
respectively. Or, use your own "plane swapping" method
if desired, just remember swap the .PAC file as well as
    the .SPC file.
The He219.bat file also swaps in the b17night.exp file
into the B17g.spc and the B17f.spc files. This removes
the ball turret and reduces the firepower of the tail,
top, and nose to simulate the increased difficulty of
seeing at night. This makes your targets less lethal to
you as you approach on a "Schraege Musik" run.

The He219 uses a Do17 exterior graphics, with a P38-based
cockpit and Me262 side views. To use the "schraege Musik",
press the "G" key to switch to the gunner view. You will be
in the "top turret", which is the 2 x Mk108 "Schraege Musik"
position. Press "A" for autofire and then "P" to return to
the pilot's position. The "Schraege Musik" will fire if you
are a reasonable altitude below the bomber, and lined up and
flying not too much faster. It is best to reduce speed,
approach from directly behind, and try to be 200-500 feet
below the bomber. It takes some skill to use this weapon.
It is also most excellent on replay (grin).

THE HEINKEL HE219C-2 "JADGBOMBER"

The Heinkel office began work in May 44 on two new versions
of the He219, one of which was the He219C-2 Jadgbomber. The
plane had a larger wing area and improved aerodynamics, with
a 4 man crew. The tail ended in a Rheinmetall-Borsig HDL 131
V hydraulically-operated turret which had 4 x MG131 13mm
machineguns. Although pressurized and armored, the tail
turret was cramped and required a small person to man it.
Two Mk 103 30mm cannon were mounted below the cockpit as the
forward firing armament. There was no "Schraege Musik" or
radar, this design falling into the category of
"schnellbomber", but there were mounts for 3 x 1102 pound
bombs beneath the centerline. The top speed was to be 419
mph, with a range of 1,118 miles at 313 mph, and a ceiling of
39,370 feet. Initial rate of climb was 1,650 feet/minute.

To use this plane: Type "he219c X" where X represents the
letter of the hard drive where your SWOTL is installed.
For example, if SWOTL is on your D drive, type "he219c D" and
the plane will load.

To use the tail gunner, access it normally as you would a B-
17 position, ie press G, then 2 for the tail gun. All other
gun positions have zero ammo.

TO REMOVE THIS PLANE: Use the "NO219.bat" file, coupled with
the drive letter of where you have SWOTL. The NO219.BAT will
remove either the He219A-7/R1 or the He219C-2.
