LIMBERG DOGFIGHT

The 354th Fighter Group (composed of the
353rd, 355th and 356th Squadrons) was on a
fighter sweep in the Frankfurt-Mannheim
area on the 12th of September, 1944. The
13 P-51 Mustangs of the 353rd Squadron
encountered over 40 FW-190s at 9,000 feet,
and a 15 minute dogfight ensued. A call
for help to the 355th Squadron evened the
odds numerically. Still, the Luftwaffe
pilots were reported as "aggressive but
inexperienced," and the claims were 30
kills and 2 probables for the loss of only
2 P-51s. Additionally, the two squadrons
were able to strafe the Limberg airfield,
destroying 9 other planes on the ground.

               MISSION

Ammo conservation may be a priority as you
mix it up with the Focke-Wulfs. You will
be quite outnumbered untill the 355th
arrives. If possible, save some ammunition
for the easy kills on the Limberg
Airfield. Although most of the enemy
pilots are of average quality, look out
for the few leaders in the pack.

               NOTES

If you find this scenario a little too
easy, just improve the enemy pilot skill.
Or, for real punishment, historically
there was a group of 25 top cover BF-109s
at 14,000 feet that failed to assist the
FW190s. Reduce the number of planes on
the A/F and create a BF-109 group set up
to pounce on you.
