ATTACK ON METZ AIRFIELD - 1 SEP 44

On 1 September 1944, P-47s of the 514th
Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group (XIX
TAC) were headed home after a bombing and
strafing mission in support of Patton's Third
Army. Unexpectedly, through a break in the
thick cloud cover, LT Hilton L. Lewis saw an
airfield near Metz. Dispersed about the
field were BF109s, FW190s, JU88s and BF110s.
LT Lewis called out to Major G.I. Ruddell,
the squadron leader. Although low on fuel
and ammunition, Major Ruddell led an attack
that resulted in at least 12 destroyed and
20 damaged planes on the ground.
                MISSION
Lead the squadron in on the Metz airfield,
doing as much damage as possible in a short
amount of time. Don't linger too long, as
fuel is critical. Of course, keep a sharp
eye out on the way home.
                 NOTES
Taking drop tanks as a weapons option
removes the challenge from the scenario.
If you want even more realism, cease firing
at 250 rounds remaining, simulating a lower
level of ammo.
