ELECTRONIC WARFARE

Leutnant Fritz Mueller of III./JG 7 took
off with his Rotte on 21 March 1945
against a major bombing raid (1,000
bombers) in the Leipzip-Dresden area. The
jamming on their radios was so intense
that communication was almost impossible.
Just south of Dresden at 24,000 feet,
Mueller came upon a lone B-17 escorted by
four Mustangs, flying at the same altitude
as the main bomber force but six miles to
the side and two miles behind it.
Concluding it was on a special mission, he
resolved to attack it. He and his wingman
flew underneath the escorting Mustangs,
and observed at least a dozen 30mm hits on
the fuselage. The bomber fell over 6,000
feet before exploding, and at that moment
the radio jamming stopped.

               MISSION

You are to destroy the lone B-17. If
possible, get to the main bomber force,
but the mission is a failure if the bomber
survives.

                NOTES

There is no historical evidence to prove
that the bomber was in fact on a jamming
mission, other than Mueller's assumption.
The only listed jamming a/c for that day
were B-24s which all returned safely. It
may have been coincidence. (I hate
mentioning this, since it's such a good
story line!) On the other hand, what was
it really doing there anyway?
