INTERCEPT NIGHT RAID ON BERLIN

In the course of the allied bombing offen-
sive, the German Reich's capital, Berlin,
had often been the main target of either
RAF night or USAAF daylight raids. In the
autumn of 1943 the RAF began large-scale
attacks against this city. Bomber Commands
Air Marshal Arthur Harris called this
"The Battle of Berlin". However in early
spring of 1944, RAF bomber losses were
mounting, alone in one attack on March 24,
seventy-two bombers were lost. After the
disastrous mission to Nuremberg, where
some hundred bombers were lost to Luft-
waffe night fighters and flak, Harris be-
gan cutting back on its deep raids into
Germany until summer of 1944, long after
D-Day.
