FLY WITH THE FAMOUS STURMGRUPPEN

To counter the amassed fleets of US heavy
bombers that raged over occupied Europe,
the Luftwaffe developed the so-called
"Sturmjaeger". These were specially ar-
moured FW 190s which were to atttack the
bomber formations from behind, using
their heavy firepower and pressing their
attack to point-blank-range. If the bom-
ber didn't burn or the crew bailed out,
these fighters would ram them.
In July 1944 the Sturmgruppen enjoyed one
of their greatest successes: several large
formations of USAAF heavies were ordered
to bomb the aircraft factory at Oschers-
leben. Despite the escorting Mustangs the
FW 190s, led by Knight's Cross holder
Hauptmann Werner Dahl, pressed home their
attack. More than 50 bombers were lost and
the remaining ones, bullet-riddled and
shot up, jettisoned their bombs before
reaching the target and turned for home.
This sortie is remembered as one of the
toughest bomber missions by US crews.

YOUR MISSION
You are leading the flight group equipped
with the FW 190 Sturmjaeger. Your mission
starts as you approach a formation of es-
corted B-17s. First, make a head-on attack
with your rockets. Then engage the bomber
formation from behind, using all MGs and
MKs. Take your time and fire only when the
enemy is in proper sight.
A flight of Me 109s will take on the Mus-
tangs, as your heavily armed FW 190s are
not suited for dogfighting them.
