ATTACK ESCORTED FORMATION OF B-17s

The high speed of the Me 262 was often
a problem to the German pilots, which
found it difficult to attack the lumb-
ering formations of B-17s and B-24s.
After the first months of combat, the
following tactic was worked out:
The Me 262s would approach the bomb-
bers from behind and 1000 feet below.
They would fly with full speed to avoid
any escorting fighters. When the jets
are almost at their shooting range, they
would pull up and aim at the bombers'
bellies and tail sections. After firing
from all guns, the Me 262s would fly
over the bombers to avoid debris being
sucked into the turbojet engines.
