Heyday Over Berlin

       (map usable)
The first major area-bombing raid on
Berlin occurred on August 23-24, when
789 bombers attacked the city, which
was defended by Wild Boar aircraft.
56 bombers were lost. Two more raids
followed in late August and early
September, also with significant los-
ses. Then began the Battle of Berlin,
which lasted from November to March,
1944. Sixteen major attacks were moun-
ted, as well as 19 attacks upon other
German cities. At first, the Wild Boars
did well; but then they began losing
more fighters to bad weather than enemy
fire. Thus, British losses up until
January 1944 were acceptable. Just as
the Wild Boar tactics became too dange-
rous, the SN-2 radar came to fruition,
giving the Nachtjagdkorps a counter to
Window. SN-2 allowed the development
of Zahme Sau (Tame Boar) tactics, which
involved harassing bombers all the way
to and from the target, instead of just
over the lighted cities. On Jan. 28-29,
43 out of 683 bombers attacking Berlin
were shot down. On March 24, 72 out of
810 bombers were downed. All total, the
Battle of Berlin cost the British 1,027
bombers <!!>. Defeat here and at peri-
pheral battles at Nuremburg, Leipzig,
and Chemnitz shut Bomber Command down
until late summer.
ORDERS: The British are attacking Berlin
again. Destroy as many bombers as you can.
