Kommando Welter, the only Me262-equip-
ped night-fighter unit of the war,
started out using single-seat Me262As
in Wild Boar-style operations in late
1944. By February, 1945, it had begun
receiving converted Me262B-1a two-seat
trainers with radar. In April the unit
was redesignated 10./NJG11 and operated
in the defense of Berlin until the end
of the war. With its high speed and
heavy battery of cannons, the Me262B-1a
was just as effective as its daylight
counterpart at destroying bombers, but
also like its counterpart, it suffered
from all the factors which afflicted
every Luftwaffe combat unit during the
last seven months of the war: lack of
fuel, shortage of trained aircrew,
lack of spare parts, lack of cover for
takeoffs and landings, no protection
from daylight attacks on airfields, etc.
ORDERS:
Ground controllers have ascertained that
Berlin is Bomber Command's target of the
evening. Engage and destroy as many
bombers as you can. Other Me262s will
be in the area to engage Mosquito escorts.
NOTE: Do not use schrage musik or put it
on auto-fire, since wartime Me262B-1as
did not have this weapon installed.
