On 17-18 August, 1943, Bomber
Command attacked the rocket re-
search center at Peenemunde. By
virtue of the use of Window and a
clever diversionary attack by 8
Mosquitos on Berlin, the Luftwaffe
was deceived as to the true target.
The Luftwaffe had been expecting
an attack on Berlin, and thus all
their night fighters were sent to
defend the capital. In addition, the
Luftwaffe ground controllers were
not even aware of the importance of
Peenemunde - consequently, they did
not know what was there that would
be important enough to attack on a
moonlit night. The Germans did not
realize their mistake until the
third bomber wave was leaving the
target. By this time, several re-
sourceful night-fighter pilots had
made their own way to Peenemunde and
began downing British bombers. By the
time it was over, a minimal number of
German fighters had downed nearly 40
bombers. German sources later claimed
that the moonlight made shooting so
easy that had larger nachtjagd forces
been in the area, they could have
downed 200 bombers. The Luftwaffe lost
12 aircraft - virtually none as the
result of defensive bomber fire.
ORDERS: Make your way to Peenemunde and
destroy as many bombers as possible.
Watch out for intruders!
