Low-Level Target Marking

After the summer of 1944, Harris
possessed so many assets that
previously "unsatisfactory" tar-
gets could be attacked with almost
certain success. These were targets
generally deep inside Germany that
by their location during the peak
of the German night-fighting arm
were considered too hazardous to
warrant attack. Previously un-
bombed or lightly bombed cities
were given a working over. Direc-
tives from higher up forced Harris
to place oil and synthetic-oil
targets on his list. In most cases,
this meant no change from Harris'
avowed area-bombing strategy; vir-
tually every major German city had
some industry associated with syn-
thetic petroleum substitutes. Only
three oil sites were attacked that
were not part of the area bombing
campaign - Politz, Leuna, and
Castrop Rauxol, all attacked in
November-December, 1944. The Politz
attack was significant in that it
made special use of low-level target
marking by Mosquitos. This led to
very accurate bombing by the Main
Force.
ORDERS:
Drop your markers (bombs, actually-
<g>) on the target so that follow-
on bombers may attack with accuracy.
Note that these "bombs" won't destroy
anything - your points will therefore
be based solely on hits on buildings
rather than bonuses for actually des-
troying them....
