During the spring and summer of
1944, the Allies began concentra-
ting their airpower in missions
designed to pave the way for
Operation Overlord. Most of these
missions took place over relatively
undefended France, providing a much-
needed respite for both American
and British bomber crews who had
suffered so much attrition during
the past year. Bomber Command had
been pushed to the breaking point
during the Battle of Berlin which
lasted until March of 1944. The suc-
cess of the revitalized nachtjagdkorps
forced the British to turn to Overlord
targets.
The summer of 1944 also saw the arrival
in theatre of the long-awaited P-61
Black Widow night-fighter. Prior to
its deployment, US night-fighting crews
had flown Mosquitos and Beaufighters.
The match-up for this summer and the
fall over France was the new Ju88G-7
vs. the new P-61. The P-61 had an ad-
vantage in firepower (particularly in
the B-model) and payload. The Ju88G-7
was 17mph faster than the P-61A and
23 mph faster than the P-61B. The P-61
was more maneuverable, and tougher.
