DON RIVER CROSSING

The German juggernaut was approaching
Stalingrad by the end of summer, 1942.
On August 17, they began their crossing
of the Don River, and the Soviet Air
Force flew more than 1,000 sorties to
oppose the crossings. The 8th Air Army
flew PE2s and IL-2s with Yak cover in an
attempt to stem the onrushing German
tide.
