31 Dec 2007 Back in the computer stone age (about 12 years ago!) Andreas Garzotto and I met in Southern California for the first time. I think it was July 1994 a few short days after he arrived in California to do his post-doctoral work at University of California at Irvine. After that meeting we kept talking and I drove him around Southern California to show him the views of beautiful California. Of course, we already "met" electronically before on the HPLX Forum of Compuserve, probably around 1993. We were both impressed with the HP 100Lx, then the HP 200LX. Andreas had an interest in programming efficient programs and the platform of the HP 100LX/200LX provided for writing compact, small model C language and a bit of Assembler language programs quite well. Andreas wrote programs at a dizzying pace, and according to one story (told by David Shier) he wrote a working prototype of ABC/LX during a car ride from Irvine to Thousand Oaks, in about 3 hours. My interest in the HPLX platform came from my background in creating systems on mainframe computers and other, smaller computers, mostly desktops. I was fascinated by the compactness of the HP 100LX and 200LX. So much computer went into such a small box! This was a real eye opener for me about the possibilities of "computing on the go". At the same time, Dara Khoyi from Florida and I befriended each other and realized we both were interested in reviving, or lengthening the life of software that was deemed "obsolete" because it was not written for Windows. We thought about acquiring the rights to re-distribute many such programs and resell them to the HPLX Community. But we were distracted :-) ... Andreas and I spoke about making ABC/LX a full product to be sold by D&A Software. (D&A stood for "Dara and Avi". Dara and I argued long and hard about the order, should it be "A&D Software" (Dara's preference) or "D&A Software" which was preference...) Andreas agreed to make ABC/LX D&A's first software product, and so started D&A Software. Later, Dara and I invited David (Shier) and Andreas (Garzotto) to join us, and told them the invitation came to them only because their initials matched the naming scheme of the company :-) Andreas meanwhile continued development on PE, PaleEdit, and added an online component to the code (later removed). This basically allowed me to edit email, and send it directly from PE. I could also receive email that way. It was very rudimentary, but proved to us that the HP 200LX was perfectly capable of performing as a player on the internet. Then came HV - HTML Viewer. This was a freeware program that painted HTML files on the screen. It was a great little program, but suffered from the lack of memory on the HP200LX. It meant that at best, we could comply with HTML 3.2 specifications, and that meant severe limitations on painting images and formatting text on the screen. LXPIC came along and we were allowed to use it to paint JPEGs and it was a great advance. HV had a built-in ability to display GIFs. After that came the next layer. Andreas added a way to connect HV to the internet and so was born a browser for the HP 200LX. It had limits, but was a real browser, demonstrating strongly the capabilities of the platform. Clearly, the 200LX was not a highly graphical machine, and so we concentrated on email. The initial code developed in PalEdit was moved out of PalEdit and into its own. We chose the name Post/LX to imply the email. Andreas found the image for the icon that represented Post/LX: The Adinkra (not Ashanti, mistakenly stated in the D&A webpage!) people in Ghana use this symbol for human relationships, and to signify that those who belong together will not lose each other. It is called nkonsonkonson (See http://www.dasoft.com/WWW/postlx.gif ). In 1995 we already had WWW/LX version 1 and Post/LX came along in 1996. We also had more developers: News/LX was developed by 'lexu Gutfeldt from Switzerland. Later, around 2000, it was replaced with RoboNewsLX created by Tony Hutchins from New Zealand. Daniel Hertrich made more changes to Post/LX in the last few years. Other very worthy efforts were made by Fred Kaufman and Helmuth Guenther. I hope I am not forgetting anyone else. And now it is 11 years, almost 12 years later. We had a great run with WWW/LX and Post/LX. The Beta Testing Team is one of the best teams of people I have been associated with. They are strong minded, capable, and know what a good software product is. The team is still hanging out together in the mailing list that served us as our collaboration platform, although almost no software issues are discussed any more. Andreas has gone to work for several development companies and is now embarking on a new career in yet another company and I think they are lucky to have him. I want to thank everyone who was involved in creating this magnificent piece of software, in critiquing it, in selling it, and yeah, USING it. The mark of a good program is that is it used to do what it was intended to do. And so it is now time to make WWW/LX a freeware product. I will publish permanent registration keys for WWW/LX on D&A Software's webpage at http://www.dasoft.com. These keys will activate the software and remove the "demo" limitations. You can then download the last version and use these registrations keys to activate each of the three components, WWW/LX, Post/LX and RoboNew/LX, and use it on the HP 100LX/200LX/700LX/1000CX. To register the product correctly, please follow the directions in this email carefully.

In the next paragraphs we describe how to register the programs to remove their "Demo Mode"
limits. If you experience any difficulty with the process, please DO NOT HESITATE to email to us
at support@dasoft.com .
1. If you did not already downloaded the program files, please do so now. You can find the
details at the end of this email.
2. To register WWW.EXE: (Remove the limitation of 16K transfer):
Run program WWWSETUP.EXE. Press F7 (or tab to "Change Registration" and press Enter).
Type in the UserName found above. Type this information EXACTLY as above, paying attention to
the case of the letters, spaces, etc.
In the field "Registration Code", type in the registration code found above for
WWW.EXE (12F5C64ACC39). Type the code EXACTLY as shown above. Do not confuse numeric 8 for
letter B, I for 1, and other such possible confusions. If in doubt, email us a question. Now
press F10. This process tells the program that it is registered to you and as a registered
program it will have NO limitation in its functionality. An unregistered program will
transfer no more than 16K (receive and send, including handshaking) then will stop functioning,
and you will have to restart it.
3. To register POST.EXE: (Removes the limitation of one email per run.)
Run POST.EXE. In the main screen, press ALT-R. This will bring a small prompt window requesting
the Registration Code for POST.EXE. Enter the registration code for POST.EXE as shown above.
This program is intolerant of mistyping, and will not work if you mistype the registration code.
After typing the registration code correctly, and checking it, tab to OK button, and press enter.
This completes the registration of Post/LX V3. If you have done everything correctly then
POST.EXE is registered and the limitation of one email message read and sent is removed. The
process above adds a line to POST.CFG in the [SYSTEM] section like so, using your own
Registration Code for POST/LX (see above):

(You may add this line manually to POST.CFG, if you feel comfortable to edit this file without
problems.)
4. To register RoboNews/LX: (Removes limitation of 10 articles per run.)
Edit in MEMO (or any other convenient text editor) the ROBOT.CFG file. In the [SYSTEM] section
of ROBOT.CFG, add the following line, using your own ROBONEWS/LX registration code (see above):

Save ROBOT.CFG. Next, copy NNREGSCX.EXE to your scripts directory and run this program. This
program will replace all the demo scripts with registered scripts. This completes the
registration of RoboNews/LX, which removes its limitation of downloading only 10 articles per
session.

it is a complete archive file with all the files as found on our website (http://www.dasoft.com/).
If in doubt about the content of the archive, please use the link on our website to download the

Product Licensing
The current product is known as "WWW/LX Version 3". We update it periodically to solve problems and add features, and you may obtain these updates, when available, at no charge from the website by clicking here.
For your convenience, we placed the components in two formats: Self-extracting archives and zipped files. Self extracting archives means that when you run the programs, they will extract the files contained within themselves. Zipped files are compressed using PKZIP and PKUNZIP or a similar program is required to open the archive and extract its files.
The self-extracting archives are convenient if you do not have program PKUNZIP. The disadvantage is that the files are larger since they include also the "extractor" code.
PKUNZIP successfully extracts from a zipped archive as well as a self-extracting archive.
WHAT'S A DEMO MODE? The latest, most up-to-date product is available to download here. What you get is the full product, but it runs in Demo Mode. In the Demo Mode we limit the programs to peform fully, but stop when a limit has been reached.
WWW/LX V3 is limited to 16K transmission per session. You can restart as many times as you want. Each session is limited to 16K transmission. You can try it to your heart's content, but after you tried it for 30 days, buy a license for it, if you like it. Thank you.
POST/LX V3 is limited to uploading a single message, and downloading a single message per session. Again, you may restart as many times as you wish.
RoboNews/LX is limited to downloading 10 messages only.
REGISTRATION: Registration makes the program work in Full Mode. The Registration Information consists of a "UserName" and a "RegID". Example:

(Not a real registration, BTW!)
HOW TO GET REGISTERED: Setup the product first and test it in the unregistered form. When you are satisfied with the performance, and have purchased the product, we will send back an email detailing the procedure to register and all the registration information you require. When you receive the email, PLEASE PRINT THE EMAIL! It contains important information. If you lose the information in that email, we can get it back, but it takes us several hours to find your specific record. Therefore we charge a nominal fee of $25.00 for each such retrieval.

The archive contains some of the email which documents the funtion. It is email that was sent in the Beta location for WWW/LX. The product is named after Fred Kaufman (Washington State, USA) who floated the challenge. It was produced generously by Tony Hutchins from New Zealand. (This gives you a bit of a flavor of the Beta for WWW/LX - about 25 people, from 6 or 8 countries.)
