When running under control of the 4680 Operating System licensed program (5669-033), the 5170 model 839 or 899 can operate as a point-of-sale store controller and support 4683 terminals. Application programs may be written using the programming languages supported by the IBM 4680 Operating System licensed program. The model 839 or 899 can be used as a Personal Computer AT when running the IBM Personal Computer Disk Operating System (PC-DOS) 3.1 or later. The 5170 model 899 includes a high capacity (1.2 megabyte) diskette drive, enhanced keyboard, 512Kb memory, and a 20 megabyte fixed disk. The 5170 model 839 includes all of the standard features of the 5170 model 899 except that it has a 30 megabyte fixed disk. Memory may be expanded to 640Kb by addition of a 128Kb memory option, or up to 3 megabytes by addition of 512Kb byte memory options. Additional direct access storage is available with a second 20 megabyte or 30 megabyte fixed disk drive, a second 1.2 megabyte high capacity diskette drive, and a dual-sided (320/360Kb) diskette drive. A maximum of two diskette drives and one fixed disk drive or one diskette drive and two fixed disk drives can be attached to the system unit. Both models contain eight option (feature) slots that support feature cards for additional devices, features, or memory. Six of the slots support either the advanced 16-bit or 8-bit option cards. Two support 8-bit option cards only. Both models use one 16-bit slot for the standard combination fixed disk and diskette drive adapter, one 8-bit slot for the serial/parallel adapter, and one 8-bit or 16-bit slot for the loop adapter card. The result is five available expansion slots for other desired features/devices such as additional memory and a display. The system unit includes a worldwide power supply and a temperature-controlled, variable-speed cooling fan that significantly reduces acoustical noise in most user environments. A security key lock, when locked by the user, prevents removal of the system unit cover, initialization of the system, and entry of command/data from the keyboard. The keyboard is attached to the system unit by a ten-foot coiled cable, permitting a variety of work space configurations. The 84-key keyboard, with an adjustable typing angle, offers commonly used data and word processing functions along with separate typewriter and numeric key pads. The IBM 4680 General Sales Application licensed program (5669-031) is available from IBM for the general merchandise sales environment or users can write their own application software using the IBM 4680 Basic Language licensed program (5669-034). OPTIONAL FEATURES ----------------- Optional features available for the 5170 model 239 and 099 are available for the 5170 model 839 and 899. The Multiprotocol Communications Adapter (#8001) is a new feature available for all 5170 models. MULTIPROTOCOL COMMUNICATIONS ADAPTER (#8001): Provides the capability to select, under program control, the desired communications protocol that is to be used. Protocols supported are: Asynchronous, Binary Synchronous, or SDLC. This adapter includes an EIA RS-232C interface. In asynchronous mode a programmable baud generator allows operation from 50 baud to 9,600 baud. The user may select five-, six-, seven-, or eight-bit characters with 1, 1-1/2, or 2 stop bits. In synchronous mode the adapter operates in half-duplex mode. Maximum transmission rate is 9,600 bits per second, as generated by the attached modem or other data communication equipment. The interrupt levels can be programmed to be identical to the Personal Computer Communication SDLC and Binary Synchronous Adapters, requiring interrupt level 3 and 4 or selected to operate on either level 3 or 4. This will allow concurrent operation using two Multiprotocol Communications Adapters or one Multiprotocol Communications Adapter and an existing asynchronous adapter using any combination of protocols. Limitation: One SDLC Communications Adapter (#1205) or one Binary Synchronous Communications Adapter (#1204) may be used with one #8001 but cannot operate concurrently. Maximum: Two. Prerequisite: Communications Adapter Cable (#2067) and either an 8-bit or 16-bit expansion slot. Customer Setup: Yes. COMMUNICATIONS ADAPTER CABLE (#2067): A previously announced cable which allows the user to connect the Multiprotocol Communications Adapter (#8001) to a modem by a plug at the rear of the system unit. The cable is double shielded and 3 meters (10 feet) long. A wrap connector is provided to test the cable.
