INFORMATIONAL BULLETIN # 0047 07/28/97 TITLE: Ascentia P and Data Race Internal Modem SUMMARY When using the Ascentia P system's internal Data Race modem to dial another modem, the internal modem may experience connection speeds of less than 28,800 bps. This issue affects the following Ascentia P systems: 503302, 503252, 503041, and 503042. NOTES The most common reasons for not achieving the highest connection speeds possible with this and other modems are: Line noise Modem-to-modem compatibility The local loop Modems are sensitive to noise level relative to signal level, or signal to noise ratio (SNR). Both V.34 and V.FC modems require at least a 32-34dB SNR to maintain a 28,800 bps data rate on a typical channel. Modems from different manufacturers may have compatibility issues when attempting to connect with each other at optimal speeds. A common reason for not achieving 28,800 bps connections is that the local loop (the length of copper wire that connects your home or office to the phone company's central office) limits the bandwidth to less than 3200 Hz.
