Last Revised AST RESEARCH, INC. INFORMATIONAL BULLETIN # 0052 09/30/97 TITLE: Large Capacity HD Interchangeability SUMMARY The user may encounter an issue accessing a hard disk drive after transferring it from one platform to another. This condition can occur if the capacity of the hard disk drive is greater than 528MB and a user moves it between platforms with different BIOSes. BIOS manufacturers use a variety of schemes in implementing the translation geometry to support large drive capacities, beyond the 528MB physical limitation. The incompatibility issue will occur when the hard drive logical geometry scheme between the two platforms is different. NOTES AST suggests the following: 1. To prevent loss of data, back up the hard disk drive prior to moving it. 2. Repartition and format the drive ON TO THE NEW PLATFORM. 3. Restore the original data to the new hard disk drive.
