===================================================================== Last Revised AST RESEARCH, INC. SOFTWARE BULLETIN # 0484 01/22/98 ===================================================================== TITLE: I20 LAN Adapter Driver Disk, v1.20 FILENAME(S) / PART NUMBER(S) / DESCRIPTION(S): 14902032.EXE / 914902-032 I20 LAN Adapter Driver Disk, v1.10 14902033.EXE / 914902-033 I20 LAN Adapter Driver Disk, v1.20 SUMMARY File 14902033.EXE contains version 1.20 of the I20 LAN Adapter driver disk. This disk contains the following software: 1. Drivers for Novell Netware. NOTE: Only Netware 3.12 and 4.11 are supported. 2. Drivers for Windows NT. NOTE: only Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 are supported. This diskette contains a special build of the Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 server driver set created specifically for the embedded AST/Nitro3 LAN adapter. NOTE Before using the drivers contained in this diskette, you MUST update the firmware on the embedded AST/Nitro 3 LAN adapter. The part number of the required firmware is 237045-003. You may also use future releases of the firmware. These releases will include the three digits after the dash, incremented by one for each subsequent release. To load the new firmware, obtain the firmware flash utility p/n 913745-031. This utility disk contains instructions on how to load the flash firmware. File 13745031.EXE is available on all AST's On-Line! forums. For further information, refer to Software Bulletin 0491. This software applies to all Premium HS systems including 503461. RESOLUTIONS Version 1.20 contains the following problem resolutions: This release corrects a problem accessing any device attached to the embedded AIC7880 SCSI controller during installation of Windows NT. This release now allows installation of the PRO/100 adapter on systems that boot from a hard drive connected to the 7880, or that are being installed from a SCSI CD-ROM attached to the 7880. Note that AST systems normally ship with an IDE CD-ROM drive and Windows NT installed on drives attached to the RAID controller, and thus are unaffected by this bug. The "TEST" button on the Windows NT PRO/100 server network adapter Configuration Dialog now functions correctly during initial installation, and will run hardware level diagnostics. Previous versions required full installation of the network software first. Note that after full installation of the drivers, the installed driver is used to perform less invasive testing of the hardware. ENHANCEMENTS Version 1.20 contains the following enhancements: This release adds NDIS3 drivers for Microsoft Windows NT 3.51. Please note that these drivers are NOT presently compatible with add-in Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 server adapters. PREVIOUS RELEASE(S) Version 1.00 was the initial release of this software. NOTES OUTSTANDING ISSUES While every effort has been made to provide quality software, several known issues remain at the time of this release: 1. Installation of any version of the Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 server drivers other than those supplied by AST, specifically for the embedded AST/NITRO3 product, may result in incorrect operation of devices in the secondary PCI bus (slots 2-5), and otherwise may not function as expected. Also, this driver diskette must be used when installing additional Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 server plug-in adapters. Up to five additional adapters may be installed under Netware and Windows NT 4.0. Additional adapters are not presently supported under Windows 3.51. 2. When installing the driver, the "TEST" button will ONLY function correctly with the AST embedded adapter. Under Windows NT 4.0, add-in adapters will install and function correctly, however they cannot be tested. 3. The Windows NT 3.51 driver does not presently support add-in Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 server adapters. 4. Both the Windows NT 3.51 driver and the Windows NT Pro/100 server adapter configuration dialog's "TEST" button require firmware 1.10 or later, p/n 913745-031. 5. No message is displayed when installing the driver on down-level firmware. Both installation and operation will simply fail under Windows NT 3.51. At present, no utility exists to determine the firmware version number. For information on installing this update, please view the README.TXT file that accompanies the update.
