AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN TB-0307 9-14-87 IBM PC SUPPORT 36 SSP RELEASE 5.1 WITH AST5251/11 In SSP release 5.1 for the IBM System 36, IBM has repackaged its PC Support file transfer program. The installation program for the PC now comes in the form of a 5 1/4 inch floppy diskette. The IWDOWNL procedure previously used with SSP release 5.0 is now no longer valid. The following procedure outlines the steps to be undertaken by the user in order to load the PC Support files to their appropriate systems: 1. Make a backup copy of the Installation diskette. 2. Insert the backup installation diskette into the main floppy drive, normally A:, and run the INSTALL program. The command to be typed from the A:> prompt is as follows: -- INSTALL D1 for a one floppy drive based system -- INSTALL D2 for a two floppy drive based system -- INSTALL F for a hard disk drive based system 3. Next the user will be prompted to make a selection from a list of 3 choices. Select option #1. The screens that follow after step #3 is taken, will differ for a floppy based system from a hard disk based system. FLOPPY BASED SYSTEMS -- The user will be prompted to make a selection from a list of 3 choices. Select option #3. -- After this the user will be prompted for input on whether the organizer and the shared folders facility are to be used or not. Select #1 for Yes or #0 for No. -- Next the user is informed of a list of files that will be copied onto a bootable formatted diskette. This bootable diskette should have been made beforehand. -- Once these files have been copied to the bootable diskette, follow the steps that are outlined by IBM in the next screen that follows. HARD DISK BASED SYSTEMS -- The following screen will indicate the drive letter of the hard disk and a default sub-directory name. It is recommended that the name of the sub-directory where AST's emulation files are located be used. -- The user will be prompted to make a selection from a list of 5 choices. Select option #5. -- Next the user will input AST5251.BAT in the PROGRAM NAME field. No input should be made for the PARAMETERS field. It should be left blank. -- After this the user will be prompted for input on whether the organizer or the shared folders facility are to be used or not. Select #1 for Yes and #0 for No. -- Next the user will be informed of a list of files that are to be copied to the hard disk. After hitting the ENTER key, there will be files copied to the AST sub-directory and the root directory. If the root directory already has a CONFIG.SYS file, it will have the necessary PC Support 36 files appended to it. If not, a CONFIG.SYS file will be created. -- Once these files have been copied to the hard disk, follow the steps outlined by IBM in the next screen that follows. For both hard disk and floppy based systems, the LINK36.BAT file will have to be modified. The modification involves the deletion of AST5251.BAT from the list of files listed in the LINK36.BAT file. The reason for this deletion is due to the fact that emulation has to be running first in order to have PC Support 36. And when the user hot-keys over to DOS to execute LINK36.BAT, the first line of command the batch file executes will be AST5251.BAT. At this point, a message will indicate the AST's KERNEL.EXE program already exists and the system will not proceed with the rest of the batch file. The deletion of AST5251.BAT from LINK36.BAT will correct this problem.
