= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1065 2-8-95 = WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS ON ASCENTIA 8XXN This is an informational bulletin. To install Windows for Workgroups on the AST Ascentia 800N and 810N systems, follow the procedures below. Before the installation begins, configure the system Windows For Workgroups will be installed on. Follow the steps below: The system should not have any PCMCIA cards installed. There should be no external devices plugged into the serial or parallel ports. The hard drive must be formatted and have DOS 6.XX already installed. The factory installation of Windows 3.11 is installed on the system hard drive. 8MB of RAM is recommended by Microsoft, however, 4 MB are sufficient. It is recommended that the system should have the AC adapter plugged in during installation. If an AC adapter or AC power for the adapter are not available, have a full charge on the battery as the installation does tend to increase the drain on system power resources. The following are detailed installation instructions. Apply power to the system and allow it to boot up through the complete cycle. If the boot up completes in Windows or a Windows application, exit the application, then exit Windows. You must start from the MS-DOS prompt. Put the diskette labeled 'DISK 1' 'Setup' into drive A:. At the MS-DOS prompt type a:\setup and press . After a short program initialization interval, the Setup screen appears. Press . Two types of Setup are offered, 'Express' and 'Custom'. Press to run 'Express Setup'(recommended.) Accept the directory displayed on the next screen (example: C:\Windows) for the directory to install Windows for Workgroups by pressing , then again Verify how you want to install Workgroups For Windows. To upgrade your current Windows press . During the upgrade a message will appear: The Windows communication driver that is currently on your system has been installed by another Communications software package. If you want to run Microsoft At Work FAX or Remote Access, you need to replace your communications driver with the latest Microsoft driver. Changing the driver will remove the functionality of the PCMCIA slots until re-installed. Keep the existing communication driver by pressing . Insert WFW disk 2 into drive A. Then press . At the Windows Setup Screen authorized AST Resellers should enter 'Preferred Customer' for Full name, then press 'Continue'. When prompted, insert disks 3 through 6, and after each disk insertion press . At the Network Setup Screen, press 'Continue' to configure system without a network. At the Windows Setup Screen, remove the floppy from drive A. Click 'Restart Computer'. After restarting, type Win at the DOS prompt, verifying that the Windows for Workgroups Logo appears.
