			  PROCEDURE FOR UPDATING FRENCH CANADIAN SYSTEMS


PROBLEM

Updating the French version of Microsoft Windows over the English version may 
result in duplicated groups, various AST Works elements not functioning 
properly, and other strange behavior.

All AST Advantage! Desktop Multimedia Computers.

SOLUTION

Use the following procedure exactly as written to accomplish a clean and 
functional update.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  It is the user's responsibility to perform a full backup of 
all of data before performing ANY operation or procedure that could result in 
data loss.  AST assumes no responsibility or liability for loss of function or 
data during or after performing this update. French version of Microsoft 
Windows 3.11 is required. 

1. Do a Hard Disk Restore.

2. After the Hard Disk Restore is complete, reboot the system.

3. Exit Windows.

4. Type
	COPY C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE C:\AST-SAVE
    and press the <Enter> key.

5. From the C:\ prompt type 
	ATTRIB *.SYS -s -h -r
    and press the <Enter> key.

6. Type 
	DEL *.SYS
    and press the <Enter> key.

7. Insert Disk 1 of FRENCH MS-DOS in the A: drive and turn the system OFF. 

8. At the MS - DOS, "Bienvenue … Install"  press the <Enter> key.

9. Change 
	CLAVIER: FRANCAIS
    to
	CLAVIER: CANADIEN FRANCAIS

    To change these settings follow on screen instructions.

10. Choose 
	LES PARAMETRES SONT CORRECTS 
    and press the <Enter> key.

11. Press the <Enter> key to accept the default C:\DOS directory.

12. Follow the on screen instructions to change disks.

13. The French version of MS-DOS is now installed.

14. After the computer reboots, place the French Windows 3.11 disk #1 in the 
    A: drive.

15. Type 
	A:
    and press the <Enter> key.

16. Type 
	INSTALL
    and press the <Enter> key.

17. Once at the "Windows Bienvenue … Install"  press the <Enter> key.

18. When prompted as to the type of installation 
	"L'installation rapide (recomand‚e)"
    or the 
	"L'installation personnalis‚e"
    press the <P> key to select "L'installation personnalis‚e".

19. Press the <Enter> key to accept the default C:\WINDOWS directory.

20. Windows will detect the English version which is installed on your PC.  
    Press the <Enter> key to continue with the installation.

21. Change 
	CODE CLAVIER:FRANCE
    to
	CODE CLAVIER: CANADIEN FRANCAIS
    To change these settings follow on screen instructions.

22. Highlight "La List  ci-dessus correspond … l'ordinateur" and press the 
    <Enter> key.

23. Replace all files when prompted to by Windows with the following 
    exceptions: 
    Note: Read the on screen instructions carefully when replacing files.

	On Disk #3 do not replace VER.DLL.
	During installation of the third disk, Windows prompts you  to enter your 
	Name and Organization.  
	Enter the appropriate information and click continue.  

	Next, Windows will prompt for installation options. Remove the X in the 
	option    "S‚lectionner des composants Windows que vous installez (Pour 
	installer tous les composants, d‚sactivez cette case). 

	On Disk #4 do not replace:
	MCICD.DRV, MCISEQ.DRV, MCIWAVE.DRV,
	MIDIMAP.DRV, MMSYSTEM.DLL, MPLAYER.EXE
	WINOA386.MOD.

24. Windows will then ask to change the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.  
    Click on the <CONTINUE> button to accept the default settings.

25. Windows will ask if you wish to update the UNIDRV.DLL file.  Click on the 
    "OUI" button to update thisfile.

26. When Windows finishes installing, choose RETURN TO DOS.

27. At the prompt, type 
	"CD\AST-SAVE"
    and press <Enter>.

28. Type 
	"COPY *.* C:\WINDOWS" 
    and press <Enter>. Choose "T" to overwrite ALL files.

29. Type 
	"COPY MSCDEX.EXE C:\DOS" 
    and press "T" to overwrite the file.

30. Type 
	"COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\" 
    and press "T" to overwrite the file.

31. Type 
	"COPY CONFIG.SYS C:\" 
    and press "T" to overwrite the file.

32. Type 
	"CD\WINDOWS" 
    and press <Enter>.

33. Type 
	"RENAME INSTALL.EXE SETUP.EXE"

34. Restart your computer and enjoy!
