TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1147 4-19-95 = INTEL ETHEREXPRESS PRO/100 PCI CAUSES ERROR MESSAGE ON BRAVO MS 4/XXX PROBLEM When using an Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 ethernet adapter in a Bravo MS 4/100t system, when loading EMM386 or using the Memory Browser in MSD, the system will display the error message: [12.03] The computer has a memory problem and needs to be serviced. CAUSE When an application attempts to write to the memory space used by the Intel Pro/100 adapter, the adapter generates a Target Abort signal to the PCI bus controller. The PCI bus controller sees this signal and generates a system error signal. The system error signal is redirected to the NMI line which finally generates the parity error message displayed on the screen. SYSTEMS AFFECTED AST PART NUMBER AND DESCRIPTION 501442-001 BRAVO MS 4/100 SOLUTION Run the ICU program that comes with the computer, and look for the address space used by the Intel PCI Pro/100 Adapter. By INCLUDING that memory area, (see below) current versions of EMM386 will not attempt to write to that memory area, and will also create a UMB or EMS page frame OVER that memory area and eliminate the error message.
