= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1163 5-2-95 = UPDATE PROCEDURE MANHATTAN P/V BIOS 1.09 PROBLEM When updating the Manhattan P/V BIOS to BIOS 1.09, the system does not properly update all BIOS features. CAUSE BIOS Release 1.09 includes newly added features and BIOS fields. An example of such a field is the addition of memory paging in Manhattan V systems with non-ECC memory. The AST implementation of flash BIOS will only update existing BIOS fields. Newly added fields in the flash BIOS are not automatically added by the BIOS update utility. The CMOS memory must be cleared in order to load all of the BIOS fields. SYSTEMS AFFECTED AST PART NUMBER AND DESCRIPTION All Manhattan P and V systems. SOLUTION It is necessary to clear the EISA CMOS before performing the flash BIOS update. CAUTION Ensure that all EISA and System Setup options have been printed or recorded before erasing the EISA CMOS. It is recommended that the EISA settings be saved to a System Configuration File (.SCI), for reloading after the flash procedure is completed. All EISA configuration information will be cleared in performing this procedure. NOTE The EISA CMOS memory must be cleared, regardless of whether EISA adapter boards are installed in the system. To perform the flash BIOS procedure: 1. Open the system and located switch block SW1 on the system board. See AST Manhattan P/V Series User's Manual (P/N 003027-001) for more information. 2. With the system powered OFF, clear EISA CMOS memory by changing switch SW1-4 on the system board to the ON position. The EISA CMOS will be cleared when the system is powered ON. 3. Allow the system to count the system memory. The system will then indicate that the EISA CMOS memory has been lost. 4. Power OFF the system, and move SW1-4 back into the OFF position. 5. Power the system ON and enter the System Setup program, by pressing during system POST. 6. Ensure that the Boot Device field is set to "Try Floppy First." 7. Exit System Setup choosing Save, Exit, and Update Flash BIOS. 8. A message will appear providing instructions to complete the BIOS update. 9. When the BIOS update has completed, remove the BIOS update diskette from the floppy drive, and reconfigure the system using System Setup and the EISA Configuration Utility. For more information see the Manhattan P and V Series User's Manual (P/N 003027-001).
