= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1207A 2-22-96 = Bravo/Premmia GX Using AST DMI Utilities and Microsoft MSD PROBLEM The program SL.EXE, included with the AST DMI Utilities diskette (part number 911874-001), provides access to system information for the AST DMI Windows utilities. This program conflicts with Microsoft's MSD.EXE, version 2.11 in such a way that running the two programs together causes the system to hang or reboot. CAUSE The conflict is based in the SL program using INT 2f, which the MSD program normally associates with Novell Netware information. SYSTEMS AFFECTED AST PART NUMBER AND DESCRIPTION 501522-XXX PREMMIA GX P100 501754-XXX BRAVO MS P100 911874-031 AST DMI Utilities The AST DMI Utilities diskette, file name 11874031.EXE can be found on AST's BBS (817) 230-6850. AST's BBS supports modem speeds up to 28.8k bps. The above file will also be posted on: CompuServe Go ASTSUPPORT AST Worldwide Web Site http://www.ast.com For AST's world wide BBS numbers, see Technical Bulletin # 1500 (1500TB.TXT) on AST's BBS and other On-Line! forums. SOLUTION There are two solutions available at this time : 1) AST distributes two versions of MSD on the hard disks of the affected systems: version 2.01, which does not cause the above stated conflict; and version 2.11 which has been renamed to MSD.AST. These two programs are found in both the DOS and WINDOWS subdirectories. The end user may run version 2.01 which will not cause the system to hang, but will report a Pentium processor as a DX2/66. 2) Rename the MSD.AST program to MSD.EXE. This is the 2.11 version which causes the conflict. Before running this version, remove the line "%DMIDIR%\DOS\BIN\SL o=20" from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. MSD will now operate normally. In order to use the DMI Utilities, the command line above must be re-inserted into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
