= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1226 6-20-95 = INSTALLING MICROSOFT REMOTE ACCESS ON THE ASCENTIA 900N/910N PROBLEM When Microsoft Windows For Workgroups 3.11 is installed on top of the default Windows 3.11 installation, on an AST Ascentia 900N or 910N, Remote Access Service will not work. Remote Access will report "Error 692" or "Error 652" when it is activated. CAUSE Microsoft Remote Access Service requires the default COMM.DRV driver to be used. The default Windows 3.11 load on the Ascentia 900N/910N systems replaces the default COMM.DRV with a special driver, SSCOMM.DRV, to work with the Cardsoft Cardview utility. Installing Windows For Workgroups on top of this installation keeps the same SSCOMM.DRV. SYSTEMS AFFECTED AST PART NUMBER DESCRIPTION All AST Ascentia 900N and Ascentia 910N systems SOLUTION Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11 should be installed into a separate directory, other than the \WINDOWS directory. This will ensure that none of the special settings from the old Windows 3.11 installation are carried over to Windows for Workgroups. It is also necessary to install the VKD.386 keyboard driver after Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is installed, as described in TB # 0941. If the particular modem to be used for Remote Access is not supported by Windows For Workgroups 3.11, it will also be necessary to obtain an appropriate MODEM.INF file from the modem manufacturer. For example, the Megahertz XJ2288 28.8 kbps PCMCIA modem is not directly supported by Windows for Workgroups (resulting in "Error 692" when it is used), but Megahertz has a MODEM.INF file available, which does allow it to be used with Remote Access.
