      Using PC/TCP 4.0 with a 3C509b, ProStation, and Ascentia 910N


PROBLEM 

When attempting to use PC/TCP, a TCP/IP Networking package from FTP Software, 
Inc. with an Ascentia 9XXN computer that is connected to a ProStation with a 
3Com 3C509 Ethernet card, the software reports that it can not find any hosts, 
or access the TCP/IP Network.


CAUSE

The Ascentia 900N and 910N systems require updated drivers to function 
correctly with a 3C509 card in a Prostation. 


SYSTEMS AFFECTED

All Ascentia 900N and 910N systems attached to a PowerStation I, II, III, and 
Prostation.  

All models of 3COM 3C509 and 3C509B series of ISA Ethernet adapters.


SOLUTION

Obtain the latest 3C509 packet driver from FTP Software Inc. and replace the 
driver that ships with PC/TCP ver4.0.  The current packet driver, at the time of 
this writing, is Crynwr10.1.  The driver can be obtained from www.ftp.com, 
ftp.ftp.com in the packet drivers directory, or from FTP's BBS.

If you are using a web browser such as Netscape, Mosaic, or Internet Explorer, 
type the entire path in for the URL such as:

     ftp://ftp.ftp.com/home/support/pub/packetd

This will take you to the directory containing all packet drivers.  If you click on 
3c509.com then it will download via ftp.  

If you type in the entire path with the filename,

     ftp://ftp.ftp.com/home/support/pub/packetd/3c509.com

it will download the file directly.

The 3c509.com driver will report version 'crynwr 10.1' when run.
