               AST Fax/Modem will not send or receive a fax.

PROBLEM:

AST Fax/Modem P/N# 202640-xxx will not send or receive faxes.

CAUSE:

Component SC11293CQ at location U3 fails "Energy Detect Output"
in the energy detect circuitry.

SOLUTION:

Using a communication program such as Terminal.EXE. Enter the 
following commands:

AT+FCLASS=2 <enter>

ATDTxxx-xxxx <enter>
(x's represent the fax number)



If you see:
  +FCON
+FCSI: " xxx xxx xxxx"
+FDIS:1,5,0,2,0,0,0,0
OK

The fax has passed the first step of the fax handshake.

If the AST Fax/Modem fails the fax screen test, as mentioned above. The 
fax/modem will need to be replaced. 


CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE

To verify proper operation of the system upon completion of this change, 
make sure the fax/modem will send and receive faxes.
