= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1447 2-28-96 = Manhattan P&V Reports NCR Timeout Errors PROBLEM Manhattan P&V systems may report the following error in the Event Viewer of Windows NT Servers: "The device, \Device\ScsiPort1, Did not respond within the specified timeout period" Event Type=9, Event Source=ncr810. This error may occur every time the system is booted or rebooted. CAUSE The NCR SCSIPORT drivers for Windows NT are designed to work with both Narrow SCSI and Wide SCSI controllers. Because Wide SCSI supports 16 devices (twice as many as Narrow SCSI), the time required to Poll all devices during device driver initialization is increased beyond the allotted time specified by NT. This results in a timeout error being forwarded to the Event Viewer. It should be noted that the SCSIPORT driver will continue to load regardless of the timeout period expiring and this error will not affect the performance or functionality of Windows NT. SOLUTION Upgrade the NCR SCSIPORT drivers for Windows NT to v2.00 using the "Windows NT Setup" utility found in the Main Program Group. The version 2.0 SCSIPORT drivers have an extended timeout period. The new NCR drivers version 1.08, files 11283319.EXE and 1128320.EXE (part numbers 911283-319 and 911283-320) can be found on AST's BBS (817) 230-6850 (USA). AST's BBS supports modem speeds up to 28.8k bps.
