= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1469A 4-3-96 = Advantage! Adventure French Microsoft Works "..dictionary not found." PROBLEM 1. When selecting options from the Utils pull down menu, and clicking "OK", after attempting to run the French speller, the screen reports the error message(s) below (point 2). 2. When a user starts a spell check with the French version 3.0x of Microsoft Works on any Advantage! Adventure system, one of the following error messages may appear in English or French: Cannot find Spell files. You chose the Spelling command and the required files are missing. Run Works Setup to install the files. -or- Impossible de trouver les fichiers de verification d'orthographe. 3. The spell checker in the French version of MS Works 3.0 will not change from English to French. CAUSE This error may be caused by an incorrect entry in the [Spell Dictionaries] section of the MSWORKS3.INI file or a missing entry in the [MS Proofing Tools] section of the WIN.INI file. This error message may appear even though all required spelling files are installed. This problem may occur after installing the French version of Works on a computer that already had an English version of Works 3.0 for Windows or Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows installed. The French version of Works may add an extra colon (:) to the line in the MSWORKS3.INI that refers to the French Canadian dictionary file. An error occurs because MSWORKS3.INI uses the colon to separate the descriptive name of the dictionary from the corresponding reference in WIN.INI, [MS Proofing Tools] section. SOLUTION To correct the invalid reference to the French dictionary, edit the MSWORKS3.INI file in a text editor, such as Notepad, and remove the extra colon. For example, if the incorrect entry looks like the following, [Spell Dictionaries] Dict1=Francais: (Canada):Spelling 3084,0 Dict2=English (U.S.):Spelling 1033,0 change it to this: (remove the : after Francais) [Spell Dictionaries] Dict1=Francais (Canada):Spelling 3084,0 Dict2=English (U.S.):Spelling 1033,0 These two dictionary line numbers should correspond with the lines in the [MS Proofing Tools] section of the WIN.INI file. The Spelling dictionary numbers must match an entry in the WIN.INI file. For the dictionaries shown in the preceding example, the lines in the WIN.INI file are: [MS Proofing Tools] Spelling 3084,0=C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSPEL2.DLL, C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSP2_FR.LEX Spelling 1033,0=C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSPEL2.DLL, C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSP2_EN.LEX Custom Dict 1=C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF\CUSTOM.DIC NOTE: Indented lines are a continuation of the preceding line. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION If the lines in the MSWORKS3.INI file appear correct, the reference to the dictionary may not have a corresponding line in the WIN.INI file or the path may be incorrect. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THE MICROSOFT KNOWLEDGE BASE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.
