= AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1475 4-2-96 = Bravo MS 4/66 WFW 3.11 Server Mode and Mouse PROBLEM While using Windows For Workgroups (WFW) 3.11, the mouse may not respond in the Bravo MS 4/66 system, when set to Server Mode (after entering the password). The keyboard does work. CAUSE The Server Mode was designed for systems using applications such as Printer Servers, which require minimum or no operator input, like turning the power ON and having the system be operational. Therefore, by design, using the Server Mode for running WFW should be considered an incorrect system/application configuration. SOLUTION In order for the mouse to operate correctly, it must be detected by the operating system (O/S) or the application, while the mouse is enabled (when the "password" had been previously entered). If the O/S or the application interrogates for the presence of the mouse while the system is in the "password" protected mode (keyboard and mouse are disabled), the mouse presence would not be detected, and the O/S or application would assume there is no mouse available for use. For optimum performance, always start the O/S or application while the "password" protection is OFF. In this mode, the mouse will be properly detected by both the O/S and the application.
