Last Revised AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1541 10/21/97 TITLE: Ascentia P, Slow CD-ROM, MPEG ISSUE When a user installs the Xing MPEG player on an Ascentia P and runs the software under Windows 95, the CD-ROM will play very slowly. BACKGROUND The IOS.VXD file in Windows 95 causes excessive seeks on data requests from the CD-ROM drive when playing a video CD. This results in degradation in the rate of data transfer from the drive. The computer may seem to stop responding (hang) due to the very slow rate at which the system is reading data from the CD. ACTION To resolve the problem, follow the instructions below: 1. Download the file IOSUPD.EXE from Microsoft's web site (located at www.microsoft.com) into a temporary directory. 2. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, double-click the IOSUPD.EXE file downloaded in step 1. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen. NOTES Microsoft updated file IOS.VXD, contained in the IOSUPD.EXE file, to correct the problem stated above.
