AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1544 08-06-96 TITLE: Manhattan S/6200 LanDesk 1.2 Failure SUMMARY If the user starts the Intel LanDesk Server Management Console (version 1.2) while Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.51 is in the process of discovering domains on the network, selecting a server without LanDesk server agents installed will cause the LanDesk Console application to crash. This issue affects the following system: 501832. ISSUE During the start up process of Microsoft Windows NT Server and the Intel LanDesk Server Manager Console, both the operating system and the software application attempts to discover domains on the network. If the Microsoft NT Server is using TCP/IP only (Pure TCP/IP), the LanDesk application will fail when it tries to access certain servers during this domain discovery process. The failure will only occur if the Intel LanDesk Server Management Console attempts to access a server on a network that does not have Intel LanDesk Server agents installed. If the Intel LanDesk Server agents are installed on the server, the application will not fail, even if the access is attempted during the domain discovery process. If the Microsoft Dr. Watson troubleshooting application is loaded at the time of the application failure, the following error message will be displayed: An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated. File : SRVMAN32.EXE Exception: Access violation (0xC0000005) Address: 0x0058194a When the application failure occurs, neither the server nor Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system will be affected by the failure. BACKGROUND Intel has provided AST with two files that resolve the failure described in this bulletin. For resolution information, see the ACTION section immediately below. ACTION All Manhattan S/6200 servers will ship with a new version of the Intel LanDesk CD-ROM disc (AST P/N 916183-002). This new version of the software will include two update files that will resolve the error. The files that have been changed are: 1. SRVMAN32.EXE 2. NTSWIN32.DLL Customer with CD-ROM discs labeled AST Part Number 916183-001 should download the file LANDESK.EXE (which includes the files mentioned above) from one of AST's On-Line! services as follows: AST WWW Site: http://www.ast.com AST On-Line! BBS*: See IB0001.TXT CompuServe: GO: ASTFORUM Prodigy: Jump: astsupport * Refer to IB0001.TXT for a list of AST's international BBS numbers. To decompress this file, create a temporary directory on your hard drive, copy the downloaded file to that directory, and run the file. After downloading the file, perform the following steps to update the LanDesk software. 1. Log-on to the server, ensuring that the log-on account has administrative access to the Intel LanDesk Server Manager directory (default: C:\SMM32). 2. Ensure that the LanDesk Server Manager console is not running. 3. Copy the files SRVMAN32.EXE and NTSWIN32.DLL to the LanDesk Server Manager directory on the hard-disk (default: C:\SMM32). 4. The updated files are now in place. AST recommends that the system be restarted prior to running the LanDesk Server Manager.
