AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1550 02/25/97 TITLE: Ascentia, 3C689 Token Ring CardWizard ISSUE CardWizard may misidentify the 3Com card as an IBM Token Ring card. If this occurs, the 3Com NIC (Network Interface Card) driver will not be able to assign resources to the card. This may produce an error message indicating that IRQ 0 is assigned to the card. BACKGROUND There are four basic sections of PCMCIA support: the card, the socket/adapter, the Card Information Structure (CIS), and the system software. The PCMCIA card holds data vital to working with the system in its CIS. The CIS contains information that indicates the characteristics of the card and how it should be accessed. This information is passed-on to the system. ACTION To correct the problem, remark out the IBMTOK.CLB entry located in the CARDID.INI file in CardWizard. To do so, follow the steps listed below: 1. Use the text editor to open c:\cardwiz\cardid.ini 2. Scroll down to the line that reads CardLib=IBMTOK.CLB and place a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line as follows: ;CardLib=IBMTOK.CLB 3. Save the changes and exit. 4. If this system is being used as a NetWare ODI client, modify the NET.CFG as follows: Link Driver 3C689 Primary data rate nn ; nn is the speed of the Token Ring. 5. Reboot the system. NOTES For further information on configuring the Token Ring adapter or for further configuring issues, see TB 1551 on AST's On-Line! services.
