AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1556 8-16-96 TITLE: OS/2 Warp, Nokia Card, Ascentia P SUMMARY The Ascentia P system may recognize the Nokia PCMCIA card as a serial device instead of a modem. This issue affects all the Ascentia P systems. ISSUE When using a Nokia PCMCIA card on an Ascentia P system with OS/2 Warp, the system may recognize the card as a serial device instead of a modem. This may cause the card not to function as it was designed. BACKGROUND The default installation of OS/2 creates a CONFIG.SYS file that may not support the Nokia card configuration . There is currently no specific card driver available for the Nokia card. The card must be used as a modem in order to operate correctly. ACTION To configure the PCMCIA card as a modem, perform the following steps: 1. Install OS/2 Warp using the default configuration. 2. When selecting a PCMCIA device, select Ascentia 800N as your system. 3. After the installation is complete, reboot the system and go to the system icon. 4. Select the OS/2 command prompt. 5. Download file IBM2CL11.ZIP from the IBM's Web site into a temporary directory. Unzip it and copy file IBM2CL1.SYS into the OS/2 directory. This file contains the fix for this problem. The current address, as of this printing is: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/os2ddpak/ibm2cl11.zip 6. Type the following command: e c:\CONFIG.SYS This will open an editor. Remove the line below: Basedev=IBM2AST1.sys and replace it with: BASEDEV=IBM2CL1.SYS /s0=2 7. Make sure the followings lines are contained before this entry in CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VWIN.SYS DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VW32S.SYS BASEDEV=PCMCIA.SYS /P DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VPCMCIA.SYS DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\AUTODRV2.SYS C:\OS2\AUTODRV2.INI NOTES N/A TAN 001145FC and 000400CI --------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this data sheet is subject to change without notice.
