AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1581 09/17/96 TITLE: Cabletron E2219 and Bravo MS Pentium SUMMARY When installing a Cabletron E2219 (9000839) ethernet NIC card in a Bravo MS Pentium system, the user may be unable to attach to the server. This issue affects the following systems: 501533, 501534, 501651, 501660, 501701, 501702, 501703, and 501754. ISSUE The Windows NT 3.51 driver does not load when the Cabletron ethernet NIC card is installed in the Bravo MS Pentium systems. BACKGROUND The default setting of this card (I/O 300 + 280, IRQ 5 and DMA 3) is not compatible with the Bravo MS Pentium systems. The card can be reconfigured using the Cabletron QUICKSET configuration utility, but the Plug-and-Play BIOS restores the default settings on reboot. ACTION Use ICU to store the required Cabletron settings as Extended System Configuration Data in NVRAM. The Bravo Plug-and-Play BIOS will read this configuration data and initialize the card with it each time the system is booted. Since ICU is a DOS program, the system will need a small DOS partition in order to boot DOS and run ICU. Ensure that the power to the system is turned OFF before disconnecting or attaching any peripherals to the system. Use the following procedure to install the Cabletron card: --------------------------------------------------------- If the Cabletron card is installed in the system, remove it. Boot into the DOS partition on the hard drive. Install ICU. Reboot DOS allowing the ICU driver to load. Turn the system OFF. Install the Cabletron card. Using QUICKSET.EXE from the Cabletron driver diskette, reconfigure the card with the following parameters: Primary I/O 380 Secondary I/O 2A0 IRQ 10 DMA 5 Choose Save Configuration when exiting QUICKSET. Run the ICU and reconfigure the Cabletron entries with the above settings. Select File - Save. Exit ICU. Reboot system with NT. NOTES See Software Bulletin #0173 for the latest version of ICU.
