AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1659 01/28/97 TITLE: Installing NetWare 4.11 on Manhattan G ISSUE When NetWare version 4.1 was installed on the Manhattan G system, the server would lock up during the installation procedure, requiring the user to patch the SERVER.EXE file and finish the installation manually. NetWare 4.11 will complete the automated installation without incident, and will display the following informational message when SERVER.EXE loads: *** Machine Check exception not supported*** NetWare will not enable the CPU and local cache parity checking. This is not an error message but informational only! This issue affects all Manhattan G systems. BACKGROUND Certain system board architectures prevent the NetWare Operating System (OS) from using CPU and local cache parity checking. NetWare version 4.11 checks for this and presents an informational message to the user and disables the function. NetWare version 4.1 also checked for this issue and locked up when SERVER.EXE attempted to load, if it had not been patched. (See 1641TB.TXT for more information on Netware version 4.1 and the Manhattan G system.) ACTION DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PATCH SERVER.EXE WITH CR4CLRFX.EXE 1. After completing the initial NetWare 4.11 installation, down the server and exit back to DOS. 2. Download the 411SP1B patch kit from Novell's support web site at http://support.novell.com. 3. Decompress the 411SP1B.EXE patch kit into the directory (NWSERVER by default) where you just installed NetWare. This will create a 411SP1 directory structure under the NWSERVER directory. 4. Locate the LSWAP.EXE and LOADER.EXE files (should be in NWSERVER\411SP1\PK411) and copy them into the NWSERVER directory. 5. Patch the new LOADER.EXE into SERVER.EXE by entering the following at the command prompt while in the NWSERVER directory: LSWAP LOADER.EXE SERVER.EXE 6. Restart NetWare and install the remainder of the patch kit normally through Install/Product Options.
