Last Revised AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1735 06/25/97 TITLE: EtherExpress I.D. with IntraNetware ISSUE When performing a Novell IntraNetware 1.0 Client 32 installation, all Intel EtherExpress Pro 100/B ethernet adapters are identified as ATI Fast Ethernet Adapters by the setup program. The network adapter will function normally, but the adapter type will be incorrectly identified by IntraNetware. This issue affects the following systems: 501832 and any system using the Intel EtherExpress adapter. BACKGROUND The cause of the problem is as follows: During the install process, the Device/SubVendor ID is retrieved from the adapter. The install program then matches that ID with the first OEMSETUP file found matching that Device/SubVendor ID. The associated driver for that vendor (specified in the OEMSETUP file) is used to install the card. The Device/SubVendor ID for the Intel Ether Express Pro 100/B (and all Intel 82557 based network adapters) is fixed. All xx557-based adapters are being identified as ATI Fast Ethernet adapters, because it is the first driver found in the FAT table containing the Device/SubVendor ID. The ATI driver is loaded and DOES FUNCTION for all 82557-based adapters. However, all 82557-based adapters appear as ATI Fast Ethernet adapters. ACTION To resolve this issue, perform the following steps: 1. Download file 12916033.EXE from any of AST's On-Line! services as follows: AST WWW Site: http://www.ast.com AST On-Line! BBS*: See IB0001.TXT CompuServe: GO: ASTFORUM Prodigy: JUMP: ASTSUPPORT * Refer to IB0001.TXT for a list of AST's international BBS numbers. To decompress this file, create a temporary directory on your hard drive, copy the downloaded file to that directory, and run the file. This file contains updated drivers for the EtherExpress card. (See Software Bulletin # 0304 for further details.) 2. If the version of Intranetware being installed does not list the Intel Ether Express as an option, instead of allowing the program to detect the network adapter, choose "Unlisted adapter" and insert the diskette generated in step 1 above, when prompted. 3. Continue the installation as normal. NOTES N/A TAN N/A --------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this data sheet is subject to change without notice.
