TITLE:  ESS1788 Drivers and AST Adventure! 4xx
 
 
ISSUE 
 
   When the user updates the AST Adventure! 4xx system with the 
   ESS1788 drivers obtained from ESS’s Web page, the user is unable 
   to calibrate the joystick. The drivers will successfully load, 
   but the joystick icon under Control Panel will not function at 
   all. These generic drivers are not compatible with the Advantage! 
   4XX systems.
        
   This issue affects the following systems: 503303, 503316, and 
   503319.    

 
BACKGROUND 
 
   N/A    

 
ACTION 
 
   To restore the original sound drivers that shipped with the 
   system, perform the following steps: 
   
   1.  Make sure Audio in system CMOS is set to "Built-in".
   
   2.  Create the ESS1788 sound driver diskette from the 
       "Windows 95 Create System Diskette" utility located 
       in the System Tools menu option.
   
   3.  Remove the ESS1788 sound device from the Device 
       Manager.
   
   4.  Delete the "Essesscwt2.INF file located in the 
       \Windows\Inf\Other subdirectory. Note: When using 
       Explorer, make sure the view is set to show all 
       hidden files. 
   
   5.  Delete the files listed below from the 
       \Windows\System subdirectory:
   
          ES1788.DRV
          ES1788.VXD
          ESFM.DRV
          ESSMPU.DRV
   
   6.  Shutdown and restart the system.
   
   7.  The system will have the "New Hardware Found Wizard"
       appear during Windows 95 initialization.
   
   8.  The "Update Device Driver Wizard" showing unknown 
       device will appear. Insert the ESS1788 driver 
       diskette created in step 2 into drive A: and click 
       next.
   
   9.  The system will find the ESS ES1788 Plug and Play 
       AudioDrive driver. Click the <Finish> button. 
   
   10. When the "Insert Disk Labeled Install Disk 1" window 
       appears, click OK. When the "Copying Files" window 
       appears prompting for the ES1788.DRV on Install Disk 
       1, change the path to be A:\ and click the <OK> 
       button.
   
   11. The files will then be copied and the driver
       installation will be complete. Click the joystick 
       icon in the Control Panel to calibrate the joystick.    

 
NOTES 
 
   AST can only assure proper system operation if the customer uses 
   AST-supplied drivers.
