TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1753 08/26/97 TITLE: Error After Enabling Desktop Management ISSUE On a Bravo MS system with LANDesk Client Manager (LDCM) 3.0 installed, when the Microsoft 'Desktop Management' System Management Services are ENABLED, a Fatal Exception Error may occur in VWIN32 (or other listed errors may occur) following a reboot. This issue applies to all Bravo MS systems running Windows 95 To access Desktop Management, click the following: Control Panel Add/Remove Programs Windows Setup Accessories Desktop Management This issue affects the following systems: 503190, 503191, 503192, 503246, 503247, 503248, 503250, 503251, 503320, 503321, 503322, 503323, 503340, 503415, 503416, 503417, and 503418. BACKGROUND When Microsoft Desktop Management is ENABLED, DMIAPI32.DLL is copied into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. This .DLL file includes the same function names which are included in the DMIAPI32.DLL installed by LDCM 3.0, DmiIndicate and DmiInvoke. The LDCM 3.0 modules will access the functions in the newly installed .DLL, rather than the functions in the DMIAPI32.DLL file in the DMI\WIN32\BIN folder. Errors occur because the function implementations are not equivalent. The errors vary somewhat depending on the system and your configuration. They may include one or more of the following: (Blue Screen) A Fatal Exception Error has occurred at 0028:C027C93A in VxD VWIN32... The current application will be terminated... Invalid Page Fault in module unknown at 0000:0064F2F6 LDFxOS 32 bit LDCM File/OS Instrumentation Could not register with service layer Retry limit reached. Instrumentation will terminate. Configuration Manager could not load because one of the following files is not present or has an invalid version number. VMM.VXD SHELL.VXD VTD.VXD VXDLDR.VXD VPICD.VXD Windows could not combine VxD's into a monolithic file before starting. Windows may not start or run properly. If Windows fails to start, run SETUP again. Press any key... ACTION To resolve the issue, perform the following steps: 1. Reboot the system. 2. When the screen displays 'Starting Windows 95', press the [F8] key. 3. Select 'Safe Mode'. 4. Remove the check mark from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup | Accessories | Desktop Management. 5. From Explorer, delete the the following file, if it exists: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DMIAPI32.DLL 6. Restart the system.
