Last Revised AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1765 10/07/97 TITLE: Manhattan and Dual Processors ISSUE Due to the limited availability of the Intel Pentium 90Mhz processors, Manhattan P & V 5090 customers may be unable to upgrade their systems to a dual processor configuration. This issue affects the following systems: 501500 and 501502. BACKGROUND N/A ACTION Upgrade the secondary processor to an Intel Pentium 100Mhz processor (CPU marking sx963, stepping C2). NOTES The Manhattan 5090 P & V processor boards are hard-wired to the proper external frequency required by a Pentium 90Mhz processor. Using a Pentium processor of greater speed will provide a functional dual processor configuration running at the Pentium 90 specification. AST does not support modifying the processor board to a faster processor speed. Several different versions or "steppings" of Pentium CPUs are available. Manhattan P and V servers must use the proper combination of these CPUs in order to function properly. Refer to IB # 0019 for a list of CPU stepping configurations. Some symptoms of dual processor incompatibility are: When installing a second CPU in a Manhattan P/V system, the customer may experience a problem booting or the second processor will not be recognized by an operating system such as a Windows NT server 3.51. Contact AST's Technical Support at (800) 727-1278 to verify that the processor board in your system is at the correct revision level to support dual processors. For additional information on dual processor configurations, see Technical Bulletin #s 1286.
